Board votes to save Belltown icon from demolition
After much hand-wringing, the Landmark Preservation Board voted on Wednesday, Oct. 7 to preserve Belltown’s iconic Wayne Apartment building as an historical landmark.
The Wayne Apartment building spans from 2214 to 2224 2nd Avenue. The 125-year-old building also houses various bars and restaurants. The building was scheduled to be demolished and replaced with a high-rise condo building.
Hundreds of people attended the meeting at Seattle City Hall to watch the board make its vote. Cheers reportedly erupted when the decision was announced. According to a letter written by concerned citizens to the board, the building represents “cultural and historical significance” to the community.
While this could be seen as a victory, this does not guarantee further developments will not happen in the area.
